L’adhérence (Al-Alaq)
1

Note [édition originale] : ’iqra’ « prêche ! » et non pas « lis ! », comme on traduit trop souvent.
    2
    qui créa l’Homme d’une adhérence.
Note [édition originale] : ‛alaq « adhérence ».
        6

        Facsimile Image Placeholder
Prenez garde ! L’Homme en vérité est rebelle
Note [édition originale] : kallâ « prenez garde ».
          7
parce qu’il se passe de tous.
          8
A ton Seigneur pourtant tu retourneras.
          9
          Penses-tu que celui qui défend
          10
à un serviteur [d’Allah] de prier,
          11
penses-tu qu’il soit dans la Direction
          12
ou qu’il ordonne la piété ?
          13
          16
          toupet menteur et pécheur !
          17
          Qu’il appelle son clan !
          18
          Nous appellerons les Archanges.
Note [édition originale] : az-Zabâniya « les Archanges ».
            19
            Prends garde ! Ne lui obéis pas ! Prosterne-toi et rapproche-toi [d’Allah] !

            The Blood-Clot
In the Name of God, the Merciful, the Compassionate
            1
Recite: In the Name of thy Lord who created,
            2
            created Man of a blood-clot.
            3
Recite: And thy Lord is the Most Generous,
            4
            who taught by the Pen,
            5
taught Man that he knew not.
            6
No indeed; surely Man waxes insolent,
            7
            for he thinks himself self-sufficient.
            8
Surely unto thy Lord is the Returning.
            9
What thinkest thou? He who forbids
            10
a servant when he prays --
            11
What thinkest thou? If he were upon guidance
            12
            or bade to godfearing --
            13
What thinkest thou? If he cries lies, and turns away -
            14
Did he not know that God sees?
            15
No indeed; surely, if he gives not over, We shall seize him by the forelock,
            16
            a lying, sinful forelock.
            17
So let him call on his concourse!
            18
We shall call on the guards of Hell.
            19
No indeed; do thou not obey him, and bow thyself, and draw nigh.

            5
Teacheth man that which he knew not.
            6
Nay, but verily man is rebellious"
            7
            That he thinketh himself independent!
            8
Lo! unto thy Lord is the return.
            9
Hast thou seen him who dissuadeth"
            10
            A slave when he prayeth?
            11
Hast thou seen if he relieth on the guidance (of Allah)
            12
            Or enjoineth piety?
            13
Hast thou seen if he denieth (Allah’s guidance) and is froward?
            14
Is he then unaware that Allah seeth?
            15
Nay, but if he cease not We will seize him by the forelock -
            16
            The lying, sinful forelock -
            17
Then let him call upon his henchmen!
            18
We will call the guards of hell.
            19
Nay, Obey not thou him. But prostrate thyself, and draw near (unto Allah).

Note [édition originale] : He who forbiddeth our servant when he prayeth;] For Abu Jahl threatened that if he caught Mohammed in the act of adoration, he would set his foot on his neck; but when he came and saw him in that posture, he suddenly turned back as in a fright, and, being asked what was the matter, said there was a ditch of fire between himself and Mohammed, and a terrible appearance of troops, to defend him 4

                    Note [édition originale] : NOTÆ.
Duplex est hìc epigraphe. Prima communior العلق  : Sanguis coagulatus. Secunda اقرء : Lege. Hæc ex primo, illa ex secundo versu desumpta. Consentiunt omnes ferè Moslemi, hanc fuisse primam Mahumeto traditam Suram. Gelal : صدرها الى ما لم يعلم اوّل ما نزل من القران وذلك بغار حراء Prima pars hujus Suræ usque ad finem quinti versus (ad literam) usque ad id, quod nesciebat, fuit primò tradita Mahumeto in spelunca Montis Harà. Jahias censet, octo primos versus primo loco traditos fuisse.
XIV.  An ignorat, Deum videre  ?] Idest : an ignorat Abugehel, Deum videre mala opera ejus ?
XV.  Attrahemus eum. ] Nimirùm in ignem Gehennæ ; ut explicat Gelal.
XVII.  Conventum suum.
XVIII.  Advocabimus nos etiam truculentos. ] Nempè Angelos nostros, qui eum severè puniant. Ita communiter Expositores.
                      Note [édition originale] : REFUTATIONES.
II. Abutitur Mahumetus officio Legislatoris, dùm pro legibus satyras condit, præsertim hoc loco contra Abugehelum cognatum suum, quem, contra jura pietatis, miseris modis dilacerat. Et quidem ille nihil peccaverat, nebulonem, atque impostorem, qualis erat Mahumetus, coercendo, & castigando, præsertim, cùm res novas in Patriæ perniciem, sub religionis prætextu moliretur. In eo etiam malum se Nomothetam ostendit ; quòd leges non ferantur in homines particulares, sed in omnes generatim, tàm præsentes, quàm futuros : ipse ad particulares, & præsentes carpendos legibus suis toties abutitur.
